Damn I want this package… I wonder how much it costs to ship it all from Detroit to London, maybe not that much??
If you want it too you have until the end of the month to sign up for ‘The Vault’, Third Man Records’ vinyl fanclub. Treat Yo’ Self!

Jack White live at Webster Hall, 27 April 2012

Jack White performed in New York on Friday night as part of a large credit card’s ‘Unstaged’ series and it was streamed live online. While it was nice to have it slightly interactive- there was an option to switch cameras- it was heavily pixelated and stuttering. Luckily the show has been put up online in full, in HD, without the problems on Friday.

It’s a great concert, with a setlist much like the London gig I was at last week- new material, White Stripes, Dead Weather and Raconteurs. I think he chose to do this as a way to assure the world that his tour will have all his great songs and, as he ends with Seven Nation Army, will rock just as hard as any White Stripes gig. Coming soon to a venue near you…

The Boy’s best albums of 2010

I’ve waited until the last minute to write this and really thought about it a lot… I’ve tried to ignore how bands sounded live and just judge the records on their own merit. Also records had to have been released in the UK this year. So here we are:

  1. Total Life Forever - Foals
  2. The Suburbs - Arcade Fire
  3. Treats - Sleigh Bells

  4. Brothers - the Black Keys
  5. Astro Coast - Surfer Blood
  6. All Day - Girl Talk
  7. Forgiveness Rock Record - Broken Social Scene
  8. Sea of Cowards - Dead Weather
  9. Odd Blood - Yeasayer
  10. Halcyon Digest - Deerhunter
  11. The Age of Adz - Sufjan Stevens
  12. The Monitor - Titus Andronicus
  13. The Fool - Warpaint
  14. High Violet - The National
  15. We Can’t Fly - Aeroplane
  16.

  17. Tourist History - Two Door Cinema Club
  18. Transference - Spoon
  19. Broken Bells - Broken Bells
  20. Big Echo - the Morning Benders
  21. Gemini - Wild Nothing
  22. One Life Stand - Hot Chip
  23. Avi Buffalo - Avi Buffalo
  24. Admiral Fell Promises - Sun Kil Moon
  25. Crazy For You - Best Coast
  26. Everything in Between - No Age

- The main point is that the Foals, Arcade Fire and Sleigh Bells albums were all pretty much 5* and I keep switching which should come first… so take your pick. Around half of my favourite songs of the year are on just these three.

- Tier two albums were pretty solid all the way through- the new Black Keys, Surfer Blood and Girl Talk albums in particular were excellent and I could listen to them again and again. Those three in particular blew me away.

- Tier three albums had great moments (if not consistency) and were definitely worth a listen. The Morning Benders, Avi Buffalo and Two Door Cinema Club records were such great additions and I want to hear more.

I know a lot is missing from this- Kanye, LCD Soundsystem, Grinderman (sorry mate) and even Ryan Adams- but I think this year was defined by quantity. There were ALOT of 3* and 4* albums so it was pretty easy to fill a top 25. Despite this quantity my top 7, and in particular the top 3, stand apart.

So now I get to look out for all those I missed… got any suggestions?

I suppose I made a bit of a resolution to go to more gigs this year and so far I’ve stuck to it- after Spoon, Phoenix and Pavement in the spring now in just the last month I’ve seen the Black Keys and Dead Weather (separately, but both at the Roundhouse), then the Morning Benders (the Freebutt),  Jeff Tweedy (Union Chapel), Local Natives (Hoxton Square) and Air (Somerset House).

It’s been amazing and I think taking a few photos will help me remember some details… oh and I’m really looking forward to Autumn when there are a tonne more great shows, November in particular! Come along.

Here’s my most recent setlist, taken from my show last week at the Buffalo Bar, Tuesday 18 May 2010.
From RAC’s remix of The Shins to Diplo’s mix of Feist this is the result of me spending hours scouring the internet for interesting remixes. If you’ve heard a track that would work here send me a message, I like getting suggestions. So I’m playing these remixes around all the best actually new new music… my favourites right now are the Dead Weather, Broken Social Scene, Black Keys and Foals, all released in the last month. Like I said, we’re having a good spell.
I’m DJing twice next week- Tuesday 1 June at the Buffalo Bar and Thursday 3 June for The Kits’ single launch at the Queen of Hoxton- The Kits are a ballsy garageband on Dirty Water Records launching ‘Salvation’, the first single from their second album, with labelmates The Spivs supporting. I recommend this very highly. Both nights start at 8pm.
Hope you enjoy the setlist, I’m proud of this one

Hi, how’s it going? Do you feel like we’re quite lucky with the state of music right now? Because, except for Gorillaz, this year has already had some pretty good albums and there’s a particularly good patch starting pretty soon.

10 May has new records by the Dead Weather, Foals, Broken Social Scene and the National. The Dead Weather’s single Die By The Drop and the album as a whole is a grower- still angular, still creepy, still Jack White. There’s nothing as immediate as before but worth persevering. The Foals album takes the lead from first single Spanish Sahara and has longer, spacier songs than last time and it works well. While the new songs probably won’t be played in clubs often they will sit well next to older material when they play live and I look forward to it. Then Broken Social Scene’s new record has alot of different things going on from one song to another and this works well, making Forgiveness… perhaps my favourite of these new albums. The single Forced To Love is only one of loads of good songs, the whole first half is pretty solid. Definitely recommended.

17 May has new LCD Soundsystem, Black Keys and Band of Horses. LCD’s album hasn’t really grabbed me yet. Maybe it got off to a bad start with Drunk Girls, which sounds (weirdly) like an irritating White Light / White Heat.  Really sadly, the rest isn’t much better. The Band of Horses album hasn’t grabbed me yet either. Their new song Compliments is quite good but none of the others are doing ‘it’ for me yet. I read a review lately that suggested they might, in a really shallow way, capitalise on Kings of Leon’s success and break through but I think they’re too M.O.R., too drab. Nothing’s ‘on fire’ here. On the other hand I do like the Black Keys’ new album, Brothers. It is definitely more chilled than normal, as you can hear from my favourite track Next Girl. One of my favourites recent releases- like Spoon they have pulled off the trick of three consecutive consistently good records. I’m always surprised their retro sound isn’t more popular and I recommend you pick this up.

24 May has new Crystal Castles in case we need even more records by then, looking forward to it.

That’s a pretty good few weeks huh? Impressive.
